Exclusive beginnings
In 1989, Lexus crossed the Pacific and debuted in the United States with a pair of bold sedans: the LS 400 and ES 250. These popular luxury vehicles became all the more coveted by drivers thanks to the brand’s exacting standards for dealers. When Lexus first launched in America, only 121 dealerships out of thousands of candidates were selected to lead a franchise. By 1991, just two years from its debut, Lexus was the No. 1 luxury import brand in the United States.Over the following years, Lexus continued to build on its solid foundation. In 1993, the industry-leading Lexus Certified Pre-Owned program offered even more drivers the chance to get in on the ground floor of a burgeoning legacy. By 2000, the year in which Lexus became the first import luxury brand to sell more than 20,000 vehicles in a single month and the bestselling luxury brand overall, the lineup had grown to include icons like the LX 450, IS 300, and RX 300 — the latter effectively launching the red-hot luxury crossover we know today.
America’s adopted luxury brand
As the years continued, Lexus smashed through barriers with record sales, innovative new vehicles, and groundbreaking technology. In 2003, a new chapter began when Lexus announced that the RX 330 would be built in North America — the first Lexus ever built outside of Japan. By 2015, Lexus kicked off production of the American-made Lexus ES 350 in Kentucky, creating jobs and revenue in the United States.
